A little known fact about the publishing industry: when an author decides to go the traditional route the publishing house almost always assigns their own choice of illustrator to the project.
This was the reason Joe decided to go the harder route of self-publishing. To him it was worth the trade in spending the longer hours learning (mostly through trial and error) the ins-and-outs of a surprisingly complicated system in order to retain creative control.
Joe would sketch drafts late at night, on planes, after happy hour, and maybe during some client meetings. He would then turn it over to Maria who would go through many drafts of her own – adding details, beautifying the look, and layering texture.
On average, each page of the book went through 10 iterations from start to finish!
